Tsurishinobu started in the Edo period when gardeners living around Fukagawa came up with the idea to let the people in the houses they visited enjoy a cool feeling. The soothing atmosphere of the Tsurishinobu hung from the eaves of their houses became popular, and they eventually spread throughout the country.

Japanese Shinobu has different faces in each season, and the subtropical Shinobu (evergreen species) has green leaves that can be enjoyed all year round. Depending on the environment, it can be enjoyed for more than 10 to 20 years with simple care. It is also a very popular gift as it is considered to be a good omen.
